Exploring Careers in the Automotive Trade

Cars are machines to which so many people are automatically drawn. So many little boys love cars and will spend hours pushing their toys around and making car noises, pretending to race or to be drivers. There are cars and racing-themed games that are wildly popular online and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t dream of driving a sports car like a Ferrari or an Aston Martin. So, given how much people love cars, why are there not people considering careers in the automotive industry as employment options when they leave school. The truth is that there are plenty of places to make a mark catering for a wide range of abilities and skill sets. Here are a few jobs with cars that you might want to consider.

Something mechanical


There are so many options on the mechanical side of things. From working in an assembly plant to qualifying as a mechanic and working in a garage to becoming an expert and spray painting or vehicle modification. And they are roles that you can move into as an apprentice or for which you can acquire a qualification. If you have an aptitude for working with engines, then spend a bit of time research courses that can help to upskill you in this area. Something like a certificate iii in automotive mechanical technology light vehicle, which is a bit of a mouthful really, is a great course to study. It will leave you with a qualification to your name to underpin your natural affinity for cars.

Go into sales


There is a huge market for vehicle salespeople because there is a huge market for cars. You can look to find employment in the second-hand or new space, the key thing is that you need to know what you are talking about. Sales are about building trust and developing relationships. In order to do this, you will need subject matter knowledge and the ability to win people over. If these are traits that describe you then vehicle sales could be a good position for you. If you are good at what you do, then you stand to do very well through the payment of a commission.

Design


Cars don’t just happen by accident, they need to be designed and it is a highly specialized and complicated field. This is a role for designers and engineers as there are so many factors that need to be considered. From pure aesthetics through to functional integration and things like fuel efficiency, drag, and safety. It is a complicated and challenging position, but the best vehicle designers are very well remunerated and highly respected.

Get behind the wheel


Vehicles need drivers and it is one of the easiest places for unqualified people to find gainful employment. It could be as a racing driver or as a trucker or perhaps in a taxi or Uber. The options are many and varied, but if you love cars and enjoy the sound of wheels on the road, then a career position as a driver could be just the thing for you.
